What "browser-based" really means
Browser-based projection mapping does all of its work inside a normal web browser — specifically Chrome or Edge running on the computer that's driving your projector. There's nothing to download and nothing to install. You open SquirrelCast in a tab the same way you'd open any website.
From there, you design your scene in the editor. Your projects save locally in the browser on that computer, so your work sticks around between sessions without any account or cloud upload. When you're ready to project, you open a second "projector" window and drag it onto the display your projector is showing. That window is what your audience sees on the wall — full-screen, corner-fitted, and live.
The short version: the editor lives in one window, the projection lives in another, and both run right in the browser on your laptop. No setup wizard, no license file, no admin password.

What to watch out for
Running in a browser is a trade-off, and being honest about the edges saves you a frustrating night before a show. Keep these in mind:
- Use a desktop browser — Chrome or Edge on a laptop or desktop. The editor isn't built for a phone; you need a real screen and a keyboard to design.
- You need a second display, which is your projector. Set your displays to extend, not mirror, so the projector window can sit on the projector while you keep working on your laptop screen.
- Very large 4K video files can tax a weak laptop. If playback stutters, lean on the built-in generative effects (which are light) or use smaller media.
- Keep the tab open for the whole show. Closing the tab or letting the laptop sleep ends the projection.
- There are no MIDI or Arduino hardware triggers yet, and no mobile editor. If your project depends on physical controllers, that's on the roadmap rather than available today.
Get your first projection in minutes
- Open SquirrelCast in Chrome or Edge on the computer connected to your projector.
- Pick a template or add your media — start from Haunted Window, Portal Wall, or a DJ / Party Backdrop, or drop in your own images and video.
- Open the projector window and drag it onto the display your projector is showing (extend your displays, don't mirror).
- Drag the four corners to fit the surface — line them up with the edges of your window, wall, or prop.
- Go fullscreen so the projection fills the surface cleanly with no browser chrome.
- Save — your scene is stored locally in the browser, ready for next time.
